Mogok; The valley of rubies in Myanmar - 4 Days

At the beginning, Mogok was in Shan State and after British, the town was put in Mandalay Region. home to Bamar, Shan, Lisu, Palaung, Chinese, Indians and Gurkhas. The city is composed of two towns, Mogok and Kyat Pyin. Mogok and other villages nearby have been famous since ancient times for its gemstones, especially ruby and sapphire.

Our visit to Mogok includes scenic ride, trekking, tribal villages visit, waterfall, motorbike ride and eating delicious Mogok foods. Permission is needed before we go to Mogok.

Day 1

From Mandalay, at 7:00 AM or so, we’ll be driving toward Mogok, on the way car will be passing Mattaya, Taung Pyone, Sin Ku districts and Lat Pan Hla. The tmperature is starting to change as soon as we get into Mogok territory which is about 49 miles away from the town. There will be 999 turning points along the uphills drive to Mogok. We’ll stop at Shwe Nyaung Pin (Golden Bayan Tree) for simple snacks and hot tea. Continue drive to Mogok, by the time we get Kyat Pyin is at lunch time. Lunch is with Mogok style foods.

Afternoon, we’ll take a walk to Hta-Pwe or Gems trading open air market and learn how the people deal and sell ruby and other semi-precious stones. Continue walk to Takaung Nan Tine, 3 lakes and to some Lisu villages throguh the mountains and streams. Enjoy the sunset view over Daw Nan Kyi’s moutain in the evening before going back to the hotel.

Day 2

Breakfast at the hotel.

Morning pack your backack with some water, sunglasses, lotion and etc. Car will drop off at the village school where we’ll start our trekking journey to Lisu and Kurkhas villages. Along the trek we will see beautiful streams, green paddy fields, and the quiet countryside where villagers are growin vegetables and fruits. After the trek, swimming at Yayhtwatgyi Waterfall. Lunch at Law Taing’s restaurant with noodles. After lunch, we’ll visit to a gemologist home to see how he is shining the ruby and semi-precious stones. See home made snack shop selling Arrdaluk cracker, we can taste some once it’s fried. Afternoon, we go to Golden Butterfly Hotel for a coffee break and enjoy the beautiful landscape. Later, we’ll go to Mogok Lake for a photo stop located in the eastern Mogok. There have some famous pagodas for local pilgrims such as Phaung Daw Oo, Mogok Sayardaw’s Cave and etc. Foods tasting is at Shan Taung Tan with local drinks and snacks. Evening just before sunset, we’ll go to view point hill to enjoy the stunning city view and sunset. Dinner is served at Lu Du restaurant.

Day 3

Breakfast is at Daw Khaung with Tohu and Shan Noodles. After breakfast we’ll start our adventure trip to tribal villages by motorbike. Pine tree plnatation, ruby mines visit, camping experience at Taunggatone where we enjoy the nice breeze and the panoramic view of Mogok. Continue drive to Kyauk Sin village and visit some homes. We’ll have a simple lunch with Lisu Liquor, Lisu sausgae and some vegetables in Inn Chauk Village. The host family from this village is very friendly and the man here is the chief of Lisu’s music assosiation, we can listen Lisu music and watch traditional dance. Bernard village is historical and we can visit to the old cemetery and the old weapon store house. Continue to eastward of Mogok by bike and this is such a great dventure trip passing stunning views of off the beaten paths in Mogok. Dinner is served at Lu Du Restaurant. At the end, back to the hotel.

Day 4

Breakfast at local restaurant with Shan style foods.

Morning we’ll go up by car to Pin-ku-taung (Spider Mountain) to see the stunning Mogok view under the sun rise. Houses are built systematically within the block and streets that we can easily see over the moutain. Hiking up to the mountain itslef is a bit challenging and it is nearly 6000ft height. Ruby mine fields, villages, mountains and countryside can be seen from the mountain. Later we’ll be heading toward Kyaukpyathet Pagoda, see souvenir shops. After the visit, at around 9:00AM, down hill drive throguh 999 hills to Mandalay. Lunch is served at Mingalarbar Restaurant.

After lunch, drop you off in Mandalay hotel.
